At just 11 years old Doug West began illustrating superheroes and selling his art at comic book conventions. By the time he was 14, he was an in demand cartoonist and comic book artist for fans at comic book conventions.

At age 16 he was offered a job, upon completion of High School, with Marvel Comics as an illustrator. This never surfaced because within a year, his career took an interesting turn.

In 1980 Doug painted his 1st sports painting. It was of Detroit Tigers legend Al Kaline, and sold it the very next day at a sports collectors show.

That was the year— Doug’s Sports Art career was born!

Now, 40 years later he is renowned, as America’s Top Sports Artist and has worked with all of the Hall of Fames.

Doug’s art has been written about and featured in Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, Golf Digest, Fortune and Hour Magazine.

Here are some examples of his work.

Doug paints upside down and is often called “The Upside-Down Artist” That’s right! Doug begins painting right-side-up, then turns the canvas over, and paints almost entirely upside-down.

He feels it gives him “an edge” and that by working this way, he can see his art as geometric shapes and angles, rather than just
faces, figures and lines of motion.

Somehow this works for him and his art is recognized wherever he goes.

Because, when it comes to Sports Art, these truly are the ‘Images of Champions,’ in all their greatness and glory!
